The Artisan Board Builder (click here to view newsletter)
Foam E-Z Newsletter

This month we are highlighting the Artisan Board Builder. This is where most, if not all, professional board builders began. I recently attended the opening The Harbour Chronicles - a Life in Surfboard Culture. It is an amazing show with many of Rich's boards from each of his eras, historical pictures from the last fifty years, and other paraphernalia documenting the history of this board builder. Rich is the ultimate Artisan Board Builder having done everything himself from the beginning. He built his first board from start to finish in his parent's garage back in 1959. When Rich first opened his shop in 1962 he was a one man show. Of course, as time went by and board orders increased (actually very quick), Harbour had to hire employees. He worked on the craft of board building with the likes of Bruce Jones, Robert August, Mark Martinson, Dick Brewer, Dale Velzy, later teaching the tricks of the trade to Chas Wickwire, Tim Stamps, and many more. He hired shapers, glassers, and salesmen but at many times over the last fifty years Rich worked all aspects of his business himself. Up until the nineties, Harbour Surf Shop was one of those rare surf shops where a person could come in order a board, go in the back and watch it get shaped, and then watch it get glassed - all under one roof!

A NEW DECADE AT FOAM E-Z (click here to view newsletter)
Foam E-Z Newsletter

Happy 2010, we survived another decade!!! It was definitely an eventful year at Foam E-Z. Unfortunately we lost two great employees Grant Nakata and RadRob but gained and incredible employee back... Grant Ramey. I know it's confusing with all the Grant's but just ask for Grant and you're sure to get someone. Ramey's previous stint with Foam E-Z was back in August 2004 thru July 2006. He left to go pursue his college degree majoring in English at University of Hawaii. During his first stay at Foam E-Z he was integral in helping Foam E-Z push through the initial transition from Clark Foam to post Clark Foam days. I remember getting a call in the morning of Monday Dec 5th 2005 and Grant said "a weird fax came though from Clark". I asked him to read it to me but the fax was a mess as faxes can sometimes be. He said that it just doesn't look good and you should come down right away, and boy it really wasn't! The point is Grant was the backbone at Foam E-Z during this absolutely crazy and uncertain time so I can't tell you how great it is to have him back. Grant has quite a background in board building from the days when he came to the shop as a customer to working in various glass shops. When EPS was literally the only foam available after Clark Foam closed Grant decided to embrace this technology and immersed himself in the Epoxy World. His board building experience along with his infectious personality makes Grant an amazing asset to the Foam E-Z Family. If you haven't had a chance to tap his mind or hang out with him enjoy the experience when it comes your way.
